Concrete Delivery and Short-Load Fees: Read the Whole Quote

A short-load charge is an extra cost a supplier may apply to a small concrete delivery. It can work differently from a minimum billed quantity. Ask which rule applies to your order and whether the quote combines more than one charge.

Separate three different price rules

A delivery fee pays for the quoted delivery arrangement. A minimum billed quantity charges for at least a stated volume even when less is delivered. A short-load fee adds a charge because the actual load falls below a supplier's threshold. Your supplier's written terms decide which of these apply.

For a real example of variation, Ozinga says orders under seven yards may incur extra delivery or minimum-load charges, with the actual price confirmed by dispatch. That is one supplier's policy, not a nationwide threshold.

Compare two small-order examples

Imagine a 2-yard order at an illustrative $170 per yard. Supplier A bills the actual two yards and adds a $150 small-load charge: $340 + $150 = $490 before other costs. Supplier B bills a three-yard minimum at the same rate: $510 before other costs.

Supplier B's minimum bill does not automatically mean three yards will arrive. Confirm delivered volume separately. Likewise, do not add Supplier A's invented surcharge to Supplier B's offer unless B explicitly charges both. A calculator should reproduce the written rule rather than assemble every possible fee.

Ask about time, access and the final bill

Get the included unloading time and the additional waiting rate in writing. Confirm any weekend, distance, equipment, washout, returned-material or cancellation charge that may apply. Ask which charges are per order, per load, per yard or per time unit.

As another arithmetic example, a confirmed $2 per minute waiting rate applied to 15 billable minutes adds $30. The example does not describe a standard industry rate. Unknown unloading conditions make that amount an open budget item.

Enter confirmed figures in quote comparison. If a small order becomes expensive, compare the equivalent volume of bagged mix using ready-mix versus bags, including handling and mixing costs.
